Using My Passport For Mac
Western Digital has released a new hard drive made for a Mac, arguably. It is the WD My Passport Studio whose difference is that it is now formatted in HFS + partitions, the file system used in Mac OS X. The WD My Passport Studio is sold in capacities of 250 and 320 GB, the same as the models currently available but pre-partitioned in FAT32 (those of Windows). The 640GB My Passport Studio will set you back $200, giving it a price per gigabyte of $.31. That’s pricey, even for a portable drive. LaCie’s Rikiki , for example, is a measly $.22 per gigabyte. The new 2TB my Passport Studio portable hard drive is preformatted using HFS+ and will work right away when plugged into a Mac. The new drive is available now for $300, about $100 more expensive. It’s a lot of convenience when your gadget is compatible to different devices. Just like the new Western Digital My Passport Studio, you can save and access data whether you are using Mac or Windows OS. This external hard drive is formatted HFS+ Journaled so it works right out of the box using MacBook or MacBook Air with Mac OS X Leopard, Snow Leopard, and Lion. Additionally, you can back up data using Apple Time Machine. If you are using Windows, you can likewise use this hard drive since it can be reformatted for Windows OS like XP, Vista and 7. The WD My Passport Studio features two extremely fast FireWire 800 ports that let you store and access data up to 800 MBps.
You can daisy chain additional external drive or other peripheral devices to your Mac. As an additional benefit, this hard drive is built with USB 2.0 interface for extra connectivity. To protect files from unauthorized use or access, the hard disk allows setting of password and hardware encryption through WD Security utility.
There is also a WD Drive Utility feature to let you register, set security, and run diagnostics on the hard drive. My Passport Studio does not use any power adapter so it’s very easy to bring anywhere. It’s already powered via FireWire or USB port. The WD hard drive is built from robust materials inside and out making it shock-proof and durable while still elegantly designed. With its high capacity and all metal design, My Passport Studio is greatly recommended especially to photographers, videographers, graphic artists or creative professionals on the go. It is available in 1TB, 750GB, and 500GB capacities.

I have formatted it for Mac and it’s mounting fine. I really hope there is a success story out thereor there will be tears I checked on this a little further. In the beta versions of El Capitan, we saw some compatibility issues, but in the release version, it seems to have been taken care of. If you were able to format it on the Mac, then I wouldn’t worry about it. It’s not working for me.
I have a WD My Passport For Mac external hard drive that worked fine, then I upgraded my OSX to El Capitan. My WD drive stopped backing up. I tried everything, incl running their utilities, downloading new firmware and calling WD support. No help there. I finally was told that El Capitan is not supported by my WD drive, therefore this is an issue for Apple and not their problem.

I worked my way up to 2nd tier support level in order to talk to a more tech-savvy person. Sadly, I waited on hold a long time then got disconnected! I had to call back yet again and work my way up to the 2nd tier and waited on hold again. Eventually I had to leave a call-back number.
It’s now several hours later and have heard nothing. Waze free download for mac. What a crock! I can’t conceive of WD, a giant in the storage industry, not having a driver to backup the latest Apple OS.

Or is it Apple’s fault? I wonder how many Apple users use WD external hard drives for Time Machine? Good thing I use a separate Cloud storage backup. As a last resort I may have to invest in a Time Capsule which will always be compatible with a Mac.
